The wine went through a long, cool fermentation in small lots by varietal, then aged 18 months in old oak foudres prior to bottling. Deep garnet-purple in colour, this is a wine with a dense, complex nose and notes of plum and cassis and garrigue on a medium-bodied palate. The foudre and tank-aged 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Baron is a blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre. There’s a leathery note on the nose, which adds a welcome savoury note to the ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and silky-textured, it finishes warm and generous. Drink it anytime over the next decade.
